I have watched several episodes of this popular program over the years because of course, my girlfriend loves it. With that said, I believe that this show is both one of the most unrealisitic shows of all time and second is one of the worst influences on young women around the country. To start, the show is unrealistic because if sarah j parkers character had the money and time to do all of the stuff that she does, she would not be working as a columnists for a newspaper. Next, the show sends a message to young women that being promiscuous is both cool and what everyone does. Even Lindsay Lohan talked about the show changed her view about sleeping with a bunch of guys (check out her quotes below in evidence). Think about how influential this program is in this country and then think about what message this program is sending out. Is this something that we want our young children to buy into?

Shopgirl`s Argument

I disagree, I feel that Sex and the City is not only a blast to watch, but also sends good messages out there to the young women of the US and the world! To start, this is a television show and therefore we can put aside all this unrealistic talk. If we look at 99.9% of movies and tv shows we would see that the characters could not afford the apartments they live in or the lifestyles they lead. Moving on, this show isn't preaching being a slut, it is displaying a message of female independence and strength. It is clashing with traditional ideas about what a womens role should be in the world and putting forth a new model for young women to look up to. It is saying that a women can get a great job, live in an awesome city, and have all the things that used to be denied to a women.

I love sex in the city but I agree that it may not be something that people under the age of 21 should watch. It does send a message that being promiscuous is ok....for example having a one night stand is not immoral. I love the show. But I know right from wrong and Im not going to let a television show influence that. So when I watch it, its purely for entertainment reasons. I do feel that younger people could be influenced by the message in the show. So Im really not agreeing with either side. I think its an appropriate show for people over the age of at least 20. So if I had children I would not let them watch it.

I agree with Shopgirl! Sex and the City shows women living there lives however they please, sexually and otherwise. If it was such a bad show it wouldn't have had the ratings or the following that it did.

sex and the city blows!!!!! how could anyone actually think that this is what women are like? and if it is what women are like, god help us!
