I cant believe anyone could say that names and their meanings make any sense. As far as I am concerned there is no truth to names and their meanings. A name is just a name man, so give it up. You would have to be crazy to think otherwise. It is a waste of time to give any thought to it. I know plenty of people with the same name who have no similarity to each other and certainly do not reflect the supposed names and their meanings that they should. There just is no significance to names and their meaning.
Why else would we give people names unless names and their meanings made sense? People search for the perfect name to give their child after searching for names and their meanings and determining what they think would best fit the child. My advise, study names and their meanings and make sure you understand the names and their meanings before anyone chooses one. And for those of you who don't know the meaning of their own names, I think it is invaluable to search for the names and their meanings and see how it can change their lives.
I agree with both of you. We give people names to differentiate between each other... otherwise, we'd all be "You." However, their meanings DO mean something. I do NOT agree, however, with parents' finding a name that "fits" their child... not until their child is at LEAST 10 years old (maybe even way older) could anyone (including the child) know what name "fits" him. For example, my legal name is Christina, which means "Christian." However, I am NO Christian, so my parents just found a name that was pretty, not a name that fit me. I have NEVER gone by that name, either. And when I get married I will be changing my first name at the same time that my last name is changed.
